Hello, residents of the District of Columbia! (And hello, those of you in from out of town or the wilds of Virginia or Maryland.) Consider this a personal invitation, from me to you, to come eat chocolate, drink adult beverages, and talk about the importance and awesomeness of blogs written by ladies at this week’s Cocktails and Convos.
Join us this Tuesday, June 14th, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Co Co. Sala. This happy hour is one you won’t want to miss. I’m not just saying that because I’m the one kicking off the conversation (although I promise I have something interesting to say). And it’s not just because, hello? Chocolate! It’s chiefly because this particular happy hour gets to the root of what Cocktails and Convos is all about — bridging Internet conversations with real-world action. Oh, and adult beverages at a decent price.
As the editor of Mislabeled — a feminist blog dedicated to the silly and the serious — a contributor to AAUW Dialog, and a lover of many lady blogs, I’m fascinated with the way the Internet opens doors for the women’s issues community to meet, greet, discuss, and make things happen. We can raise awareness of poor media coverage. We can talk with someone who lives in a different country or on a different continent. We can debate what it means to be feminist and how we should talk with each other. Yes, we can! And we do it in ways that last much longer than a campaign slogan.
But those conversations don’t take place in a vacuum. They are about the real world, and so they (should) have an impact on that world. That’s why real-world events like Cocktails and Convos are just as important as blogs. And that’s why I really, really, really want you to come hang out with all of us on Tuesday.
So please join me, AAUW, and plenty of awesome bloggers as we clink glasses, eat chocolate, and make new Facebook friends. Hope to see you there.
