More than 60 diverse participants attended the successful launch of Elect Her—Campus Women Win at Denison University in Granville, Ohio, organized by Dr. Marci McCaulay, Director of the Center of Women and Gender Action, and sponsored by Laura Smiley Miller of the AAUW Cleveland, OH branch.
Hannah Frank serves as the current Student Government President – the first woman to hold that position in seven years. As an Education/English major, Hannah likens her experience as a teacher to that of her role as SGA President: “to nurture, encourage, inspire and empower others.”
Her student leader colleagues, Corrine Cox and Aminata Kaba, joined Hannah on a panel as they shared their election strategies.
The students enthusiastically received Nicole Ward of Cleveland, representing AAUW, and Judge Laurel Beatty of Columbus, as they shared their leadership experiences. Dr. Amanda Gunn spoke about the importance of message development to prepare the students for their “stump speeches.”
After listening to seven outstanding campaign speeches, the Elect Her mock election winner was Michelle Agunloye from Chicago.
Michelle, whose parents are from Nigeria, was inspired by the workshop and is anxious to learn even more about what she can do to develop herself as a future political candidate. “I honestly enjoyed the conference and learned so much about the need for women in political roles,” wrote Michelle.
The only suggestion to make the day better: make it longer!
