Today we remember Sally Ride, the dreamer, pioneer, and role model who lifted our eyes to the sky in wonder.
Ride died yesterday of pancreatic cancer at the age of 61. She leaves behind a legacy that includes being the first American woman in space and the youngest American in space as well as a lifetime of work inspiring girls to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). When Ride soared into space in the Challenger, she set an example for girls to reach for the stars. And the books, materials, and programs she developed later in life are lasting proof of her commitment to STEM education.
We at AAUW are grateful for Ride’s invaluable impact on STEM, and we are in awe of the fearless, humble passion that launched her into the clouds, into the history books, and into our hearts.
Truly a hero worthy of respect and a moment of silence, a glance upward.
