Like thousands across the globe, AAUW has joined the Half the Sky Movement in support of women and girls around the world. Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is based on Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s best-selling book of the same name and is part of the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens. AAUW member Jane Roberts and International Fellowship Alumna Tererai Trent are among the outstanding women featured in the book.
In Half the Sky, which premieres on October 1 and 2, six talented actress-advocates —Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union, Diane Lane, America Ferrera, and Olivia Wilde — join Kristof as he travels to Asia and Africa to meet face-to-face with inspiring individuals who are working to bring about change and with women and girls who confront extreme gender inequality in their daily lives.
Independent Television Service, a national documentary screening series, is holding special advance screenings of Half the Sky in communities during the month of September. For information about screenings in the Washington, D.C., area on September 17 and 30, visit www.communitycinema-dc.org.
Not in D.C.? Find a free screening in your community.
And while you’re at it, make a commitment to action, and join the movement to find out what you can do to turn oppression into opportunity.
