This month, many of you have already participated in special advance screenings of Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide in communities across the United States. There have also been forums and opportunities to meet and hear from writer Nicholas Kristof, the amazing women in the series, and Executive Producer and Director Maro Chermayeff. Thousands have taken the opportunity to join the movement, commit to action, and find out what they can do to turn oppression into opportunity. AAUW has mailed Half the Sky Salon Toolkits with DVDs to our dedicated members from coast to coast who are committed to mobilizing women and men in their communities in support of women and girls around the world. But it’s only the beginning.
Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide is based on Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s best-selling book of the same name and is part of the Emmy Award-winning PBS series Independent Lens. The documentary premieres on October 1 and 2, so join Kristof as he and six celebrity activists travel to 10 countries in Asia and Africa to meet face-to-face with inspiring individuals who are working to bring about change for women and girls who confront extreme gender inequality in their daily lives.
Get your watch party organized, and prepare to be inspired and to take action. What will you do with your opportunity to create change?
