Today, AAUW marks Equal Pay Day — the symbolic point each year when women’s pay catches up to what men made the year before. AAUW recognizes this day as a reminder of the work we have yet to do to close the gender pay gap, and our organization is dedicated to the fight for fair pay 365 days a year.
I wrote an op-ed, which was published on the Huffington Post today, on the pay gap and how AAUW is leading the charge against it. I urge you to check it out and read more about the new guide to pay equity that we released yesterday as well as the flash mob dance we coordinated with the Center for American Progress Action Fund.
I’m pleased to see my op-ed and the larger issue of fair pay getting the attention they deserve today, because we need to stop undermining the economic security of American women and families.
I look forward to the day when Equal Pay Day falls on December 31.
Here is a link to an article written by the executive director of the Independent Women’s Forum that says there is no wage gap between men and women. After looking at the organization’s web site, it is clear that they are on the opposite side of most issues from AAUW. In this article she sites only one piece of research to refute the pay gap. Is that because she couldn’t find any others? I can’t believe that we still have to fight these issues with other women. She says women make less because they are willing to take jobs that are more comfortable and less demanding than the jobs men take. She obviously hasn’t read any of the research on STEM jobs either. http://www.iwf.org/news/show/24672.html
